The Stuff That Stays

I'm in the process of moving.

It began on Saturday. Actually, it began before that, when I started boxing things up and repainting the apartment. I will continue to be in the process for at least another week or so. Moving is exciting. It's also an assload of work. One of the perks of moving is you get to purge all your old shit. It's like that show Clean Sweep. You inventory stuff, you scour the new apartment for a fresh, clean beginning and you're ready to go.

One of the interesting things about moving is what stays and what goes. Obviously there are decisions to be made about the big stuff. - the couch, the TV, the mattress. Do I get a trailer? Do I just get a new one? But then there are the little things. The things that just somehow survive.

For instance, there is one of the smallest things that has officially survived between 6 and 8 moves (depending on if you count a month here or there with the parents while in transition).

It did not start out as mine. I believe it started out as a roommates. Then it travelled to a new apartment, without said roommate. Somehow, it tagged along after graduation to grad school, where it survived 2 moves and a really bad relationship there. Then it came down south with me and it came with me again, where it is now in my new residence. And it sort of makes me laugh.

And my fiance doesn't really mind it, as long as it stays clothed.

What is it?

I'll give you 3 guesses.

Songs that I Heard Today That Make Me Think of Eleanor:

1. She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy, Kenney Chesney
The only think I can ever think of when I hear this song is El, dancing in our dormroom in Rome. This is maybe the funniest thing I've ever seen.

2. Closer to Fine, Indigo Girls
Yes, we were there and saw it live. And though it might be a little embarassing in retrospect (and even though the fiance told me he was going to try and forget that I told him I'd been to an Indigo Girls concert), it was a GREAT concert.

3. Gin and Juice, The Gourds (the non-Snoop version)
I think El introduced me to this version in the good old Napster days of 2000.

4. I Try, Macy Grey
Ok, another mental picture of El acting this song out line by line. Classic Eleanor.

5. I Got You, Baby, Sonny and Cher
Our song. She stood by me and my lip sink desires to perform this song. She is the Sonny to my Cher.

Mean IRS Lady

I know I haven't blogged in almost 2 months. I know I told my sister I thought it was pretty much finished. I'm engaged, I'm moving, I got a job at a new school, I'm getting married. Things are good. Aside from packing. And aside from the fucking IRS lady. I know this sounds so juvenile, but she was really mean on the phone today and I really hate her. I told her that she "got attitude" with me and I ended up hanging up. Then I cried and called my dad. When he found out what it was about he asked, "Is that all that's wrong?" He thought I "hit a child or a dog or something." I guess I can't blame him. I called the IRS back again, I had a much nicer IRS lady on the line. It'll be Ok. But I still hate them.
